I wish I could claim this recipe as my own, but no - I found it on the aptly-named blog Cumin & Coriander (cumicori.blogspot.com). But I made it last night and was really pleased at the flavor the cumin gave the burgers (I used about 1 teaspoon of cumin - the recipe calls for 2). Here is blogger Stefanie's recipe for homemade hamburgers with cumin:

This is what I end up making when I have ground beef in the freezer and don't feel like standing in front of the stove stirring anything saucy. Homemade burgers are so much better than the ready-made kind; the taste is just more... organic. The best part about it is my mom bought me a beautiful grill pan for Christmas and I'm just thrilled about getting those sexy grill marks on everything now!

I don't really measure out the ingredients; yes, I'm one of those cooks who goes by a pinch of this and a dash of that. It's all about feeling out the dishes. So here are my guess-timates of what I used Smiling

1 lb lean ground beef
1 medium onion finely diced
2 tsp cumin powder
1 tsp oregano
1/2 tsp cayenne
handful of fresh coriander, chopped
salt to taste
a couple turns of the pepper mill
1 cup breadcrumbs
1 egg

Using your hands, combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl. Mold into palm-sized burger patties. Heat a little vegetable oil on a grill pan over medium heat. Grill burgers for approximately 5 minutes per side or until grill marks appear.

Serve with burger buns, all the relishes (like sliced tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, mustard) and sauteed vegetables (well, that's how I like it, but you could serve it however you like to eat your burgers.)

Makes about 6-8 burgers.
